Kanban and Scrum boards that fit how your team works

Brainitive boards show your project's work as cards in columns, and every card is a full issue with a key, an assignee, dates, comments and history. Run a board as Kanban, or switch on sprints to get a backlog, planned sprints and burndown charts on the same board. Shape it to your team with custom fields, saved views, swimlanes and templates.

Boards, Kanban & Scrum

A Brainitive board is a Kanban board by default, and the same board becomes a Scrum board with a backlog, sprints and reports when you turn on sprints. You plan, track and finish work in one place without switching tools.

  • Switch any board between Kanban and Scrum in its settings with Use sprints (Scrum). Sprints last 1, 2, 3 or 4 weeks or a custom range, and you can plan several ahead.
  • Reports show a burndown per sprint and the velocity of the last 7 completed sprints, counted in story points or in issues.
  • Set a WIP limit per column (the header turns red when it is over), mark a Done column, and split the board into swimlanes by assignee, priority, type, fix version or your own rules.
  • Look at the same issues as Board, List, Timeline or Calendar. Subtasks nest up to three levels, and issues link with types such as blocks, relates to and duplicates.
  • Every issue keeps a full history and a work log: log time like 45m or 1h 30m against an estimate, and see teammates' changes on your open board without reloading.

Saved board views

Saved board views store the way you look at a board (filters, layout, list sorting and hidden columns) under a name, so you can get back to it in one click. Keep a view to yourself or share it with everyone on the board.

  • Views under My views are private. Board managers can share a view with the team as a Team view.
  • Mark a view as Your default to open the board with it every time, or pick All issues to see the plain board.
  • A dot and (unsaved changes) tell you when you have changed a view. Save, rename, duplicate, share or delete it from the Views menu.
  • The Only my issues filter in a shared view shows each person their own issues.
  • Filters are also part of the page address, so you can bookmark a filtered board or send the link to a colleague.

Custom fields

Custom fields let you add your own information to issues, such as a customer, a budget, a go-live date or a needs-QA checkbox. You can filter and sort by them and show them as columns in the list view.

  • Five field types: text, number, date, yes/no checkbox and a list of options.
  • Project admins define fields in Project settings → Fields, for all boards of the project or only some. Editors fill them in on the issue.
  • Filter the board by any custom field, sort the list view by it, and choose which fields show as list columns.
  • Changes to a field value appear in the issue history. Archiving a field or an option hides it from pickers but keeps the existing values.

Bulk edit

Bulk edit lets you change many issues at once from the list view instead of opening them one by one. It is useful for triage, sprint planning and cleanups.

  • Tick issues in the List view. Shift-click selects a range, and the header box selects everything visible.
  • Change status, assignee, priority, type, sprint, due date or labels for all selected issues in one go, or delete them after a confirmation.
  • Labels can be added or removed across the whole selection.
  • Up to 200 issues per bulk action. Press Esc to clear the selection.

Recurring issues

Recurring issues create themselves on a schedule, so weekly reviews, monthly reports and yearly renewals land on the board without anyone having to remember them. Each new issue comes with its assignee, priority, labels and due date already set.

  • Schedules: daily, weekly on chosen days, every N weeks, monthly (a fixed day, or a rule such as the last weekday) or yearly.
  • Start from the board menu → Recurring issues, or open an existing issue and choose Make this recurring.
  • Set an end date or a number of occurrences, preview the next dates before saving, and pause or resume a schedule at any time.
  • Cards created this way show a badge such as Repeats weekly.

Project templates

Project templates start a complete project, with boards, columns, issue types, fields, labels, starter issues, docs, checklists and plans, in one step. Pick one of 20 built-in templates or save one of your own projects as a template.

  • 20 built-in templates in seven categories: Software, Marketing, Agency & clients, HR & people, Sales, Operations & finance, and Personal & team. Examples include Scrum project, Bug tracking, Content calendar, Recruiting pipeline and Team goals (OKRs).
  • Open a template to see exactly what you get before you create the project, and leave out parts you don't need.
  • Choose a start date, and due dates and plan bars move with it.
  • Workspace admins can save a project as a template in Project settings → General. Your team's templates appear under Your workspace.
  • A template is a copy: comments, attachments, members and assignees are never captured, and a project doesn't change when the template is edited later.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Scrum and Kanban in the same project?

Yes. A project can have as many boards as you like, and each board is Kanban by default. Turn on Use sprints (Scrum) in one board's settings to give it a backlog, sprints and reports, while other boards in the same project stay Kanban. You can turn sprints off again the same way.

Can I import my boards from Jira or Trello?

Yes. Brainitive imports Trello boards from their JSON export and Jira issues from a CSV export (all fields). Jira imports bring over statuses, types, priorities, epics and sub-tasks, labels, sprints, issue links, story points and comments. You check a preview and map columns, labels and people before anything is created.

Does Brainitive have burndown and velocity charts?

Yes. Scrum boards have a Reports tab with a burndown chart for any sprint and a velocity chart for the last 7 completed sprints. Both count story points when issues have them, otherwise the number of issues. You can switch the burndown between a chart and a table.

Can I add my own fields to issues?

Yes. Project admins can add custom fields of type text, number, date, yes/no or a list of options. You can filter the board by them, sort the list view by them and show them as columns. Fields can apply to all boards of a project or only to some.

Are boards free to use?

Yes. Every feature is in every Brainitive Cloud plan, including Free, which allows up to 3 members and 5 projects per workspace. Boards themselves are unlimited in every plan. Brainitive is also open source, and you can self-host it on your own server.

Who can edit issues on a board?

People with the Editor or Admin role in a project create and edit issues and boards. Viewers can read everything and comment. Only project admins delete boards and other people's issues.
